In the early spring of 2023, a Lathrup Village police officer had the unfortunate experience of being called to the scene of a barricaded gunman taking his own life. The City Administrator promptly informed City Council of the situation and outcome. Sergeant Zang was the lead officer on the scene. The deceased’s father subsequently sent a beautiful letter to the Chief of Police, thanking Sergeant Zang for his compassion, integrity, and professionalism. The City Administrator forwarded this email to the Council members so they could see that Sergeant Zang is an exemplary officer. Ms. Miller then responded to all people on the distribution list, (making it a potential Open Meetings Act violation) including Sergeant Zang, and callously stated, “We should have received follow up information on this situation. Residents first!” Rather than taking the time to congratulate Sergeant Zang on his exemplary service, Ms. Miller used her email to vent her displeasure for not receiving an update (of which, there were none).
The City Administrator responded to Ms. Miller reminding her of the Open Meetings Act, letting her know that there was no follow up information to report, and suggesting kindness to Sergeant Zang who had to experience a horrific, stressful situation. Ms. Miller responded to the City Administrator with one of her typical caustic rants accusing her of disrespect, harassing her about her former employment, and ending with the statement, “You and staff are here to support our efforts.”
The last statement is especially interesting as it, once again, illustrates Ms. Miller’s lack of understanding of her role. The City Charter is quite clear that Council sets the policy for the City and the City Administrator runs the day-to-day operation of the City. The City Administrator and staff are not Ms. Miller’s personal support team. Click here to see the email thread (read from the bottom to the top).
